Montana Campus Corps:
College Students Meeting Critical Community Needs
Understanding and working with teens by Tobin Frizzell

When I first volunteered I had no determined goal in mind for my degree in Substance Abuse Counseling. Through my volunteer efforts I was connected with the local Center for Restorative Youth Justice program. I became involved with the mentoring portion as well as the Community Accountability Board. I have been working with kids who are not bad kids, they just need a bit of direction and above all, the experience of being held accountable. I have seen marked improvement in these kids over the ones who get pushed through the legal system. Many of the graduates of the program return to volunteer at the center. It has been very encouraging to witness the impact of the possitive approach presented by CRYJ. I have learned a great deal of "real-life" practices in the process that are not necessarily purposed in the text books. I would highly recommend to all students that they should experience the volunteer aspect of college. It will highten the sense of learning, as well as, broaden your experience and knowlege.
