Montana Campus Corps:
College Students Meeting Critical Community Needs
The Impact by Maureen Karlin

As a returning Americorps member, I am constantly amazed by the quality and variety of volunteers who show up to serve. As the person who is privileged to coordinate tutors in local elementary classrooms, I have seen the need for volunteers continue to grow as federal funding continues to diminish. Even the most skilled and experienced educator struggles to meet the needs of the diverse student population in our elementary schools. Teachers need extra assistance, and they are extremely grateful to find it in our America Reads America Counts volunteers. According to our teacher-partners, our volunteers are dedicated, responsible, and enthusiastic. Teachers and principals return to our program year after year-a testament to their satisfaction in our program.
Our tutors, also, continue to return to our program in order to serve in their community. Many tutors are future educators themselves, and understand the need for extra help in the classroom while also gaining invaluable experience from knowledgeable and willing professionals.
Overall, I consider myself extremely fortunate to be involved in such an all-encompassing service opportunity. The people I have met have made a permanent impact on my life. I hope I can make such an impact.
