Bringing a neighborhood together. by Kelsey Redmond
This past summer I was the Community Garden Assistant for Garden City Harvest. My tasks were to take care of the 2nd st garden as well as assist in caring for 4 other community gardens in Missoula. For each community garden, throughout the summer, we organize, advertise and host work days/pot lucks with the gardeners to get some extra projects done around the garden as well as try to have other gardeners meet and get to know each other.
The 2nd street garden is much smaller then all the other gardens so it is tough to get people to come to the work days. My boss and I were trying to think of ways to get the gardeners more interested in getting involved in the garden. We decided to have a neighborhood potluck with music, food and pumpkin carving to bring more people to the garden. We put up fliers all around the neighborhood and advertised to are gardeners as well. Not knowing how many people would show up, we just hoped for the best and planned as if at least 10 people would show up.
When the day came, there ended up being about 20 people coming. This was very beneficial for the garden because neighbors who had never been there before got to spend some time and learned that it is open to the public as well as meet some of the gardeners that garden there. It was a great feeling to see a community coming together and getting to know each other.
