My placement as a social work intern in a hospital provided me with incredible insight into the complexities of the health care system. Perhaps more valuable to my practice, however, was the incredible compassion and care I was able to witness as clinicians cared for their patients. I learned that while it is far too easy to become frustrated at the way our current health system cares for our citizens, it is far more beneficial to focus on the positive aspects of the amazing work being done around us. Helping an individual with a task that may seem small like filling out a food stamp application can have immense positive repercussions. It was moments such as these that I learned to hold on to in the face of adversity.
