College Students Meeting Critical Community Needs
Welcome baby, to your loving new world by Shelby Frye

Spending many days in the Labor and Delivery unit of the hospital this year brought me to an amazing couple who came in early one day to give birth to their second child. I was able to devote my entire day to them in L&D as well as the following day in Postpartum and as a result both of our lives were enriched in the most beautiful way. I feel that we had an incredible personal connection and I was able to go above and beyond to be the best patient advocate I could for their needs. We experienced an enormous amount of pain management during her labor and delivery using nonpharmacologic methods such as massage, hot and cold packs, and repositioning. I was able to communicate personal desires that were extremely important to this couple concerning the circumcision of their newborn son. As well, I was the nurse who delivered all the necessary care for those two days, which provided them with a lot of familiarity and comfort. Due to the attachment I felt and gratitude for letting me be a part of their lives during this special time, I left them with a gift of my favorite outfit that belonged to my youngest son when he was a new baby and they told me that their son would wear it in his first baby pictures. Also, upon returning to the ward for my shift the next week, I was delighted to find two yellow roses for me and a thank you card given to the charge nurse on my behalf with words of their gratitude for my presence on their special day welcoming a beautiful new member of their family!
