Total Stranger to Big Brother by Seth Shields

This is my first year in americorps. I never thought I would be doing this, until my best friend died and I took up his philosophy from 4-H, to make the best better. I never knew what this ment, until the day I came back to my home reservation. I wanted to make this community better. I did not know how until our student service president told me about this program. After I was introduced to what this program meant and did to help other people, I wanted to help my community not only in the present but the future. So i decided to do my hours at the Boys and Girls club. When I first arrived, all the little kids looked at me and just glared because I was a new and total stranger to them. After a few weeks of talking to the kids and occasionally helping them with their homework, I started to become a big brother to them. Now i feel like I am making a difference to them because I help them with their homework and even the occasional life problems.
