Loving Math by Kelsey Foerster
I am teaching second grade and one of my students is very low. He is working at a mid kindergarten level, and learning is hard for him. Since he has struggled with learning he doesn't like school very much. Although this year I have seen him grow. I have watch him barely able to say his letter sounds to being able to read short books. Although my favorite moment with this student this year has to be when he came in late to school one day. Now most days when he comes in late he come in with an attitude and just distracts the whole class with his behavior, but this day was different. After lunch he came in and sat down and was quiet, so I didn't think anything of it. All the other students were playing with clay as they were listening to a story being read. All of a suddden this student's had goes up in the air. When I go over to see what he needs, he told me he finished his math (now granted I never asked him to do his math, and I really never expected him to do it on his own). After I finished correcting his math he had gotten all his questions correct. I asked him if he wanted to play with his clay and he told me no, so I asked him if he wanted to draw. He told me no again. He then proceeded to tell me that he wanted to do another math worksheet. I wanted to give that student a hug right there. He made me so proud that he is starting to like school. I felt so blessed that I could watch him grow this year.
