Behavioral Breakthrough by Molly Prince
During my undergraduate degree at the University of Montana I learned many strategies and techniques for teaching, however I still did not feel well prepared to teach in a classroom. When I began student teaching and began my Campus Corps service I set a goal for myself to work on behavioral management in the classroom. This was the most challenging aspect of my job because there is no textbook to look up "What do I do when 20 kindergartners won't raise their hands?" I worked with one student in particular who had an extremely tough home life and whose behavior was very disruptive during class. I developed a behavioral plan in which he would earn a sticker for each transition during the day that he was following expectations. This plan seemed to work flawlessly. The student was excited to try his best to earn a sticker and loved earning a bigger sticker at the end of the day. I feel that too many kiddos get overlooked in the public school system and are punished instead of being helped. I am extremely thankful that I was able to assist such a great bunch of kindergartners and better myself in the process.
