Privilege of Serving by Rebecca Salyer
During my time serving as a Campus Corps member, I had the privilege of serving very vulnerable populations. I worked with a pregnant teen one-on-one providing her with emotional support and basic educational need support. I found this profoundly impacted me as much as it did for her, and I was grateful to have been a part of her life. I also shadowed preceptor nurses at the Public Health Department, and gained a reverent respect for their service. Seeing how they reach out daily to so many vulnerable populations with compassion and caring they really became an iconic role model for me. Furthermore, I had the valuable opportunity of shadowing an experienced leader/manager, and the valuable lessons about valuing others, advocating for patients, always doing your best, and leading by example will stay with me as I anticipate starting a nursing career as a BSN Graduate of MSU. The opportunities I had while serving in Americorp have left me forever changed in a positive way, setting me up to attain the goals of making a positive difference in the lives of everyone I come into contact with or have the privilege of serving.
