What nobody knows by Sarah Lapierre
In my time with Campus Corps I worked with an organization that devoted itself to helping homeless families attain "sustainable independence". When talking with members in the community and at my college about my work they grew quizzical and would say, "There are homeless families here?" I thought at first that maybe they just weren't aware because they were college kids and - let's face it - just aren't that tuned into to societal inequities, but then adults would say similar things to me and I realized it was a real problem - not just homelessness, but the lack of knowledge about it. There are so many families who apply to this program in the hope that they'll be able to get back on their feet and start fresh, and the people in the community who could help them - even with just a little bit of their time - were completely unaware of the situation. It was then that I realized that spreading the word about societal concerns is just as important as striving to end them.
