The Community Coming Together to Help the Homeless by Sarah Guhl
On January 26, 2012, I was able to part of the team that helped homeless individuals and families connect to the multitudes of services available to them that could help them recover from economic problems and other situations that contribute to their homelessness. Project Homeless Connect is a nationwide event that helps connect people that are homeless or at risk of losing their homes with many different social services at an all day, one stop shop. My task was to sign in other volunteers that were there to be Special Event Assistants and to act as personal guides for each participant during the event. Each participant received a list of the available services when they entered the doors, and their guides would help to prioritize the person’s needs and desires. With over 60 services being offered in one day, each person was able to obtain access to many services that might take months to access, if they were not all located in one central place. I was there during the morning shift of the event, and by the time I had left, we had already registered over 100 volunteers that had come to help. It was really fantastic to see the local businesses, health care providers, nonprofit organizations, individual people, and families all come together to form a community to help end homeless in Missoula and the surrounding areas. I am really proud to be a part of this wonderful community, and am so thankful for the opportunity to help out with this fabulous event!
