Breaking the Ice by Brooke Lemer

There was a planned field trip to the ice rink in Whitefish, which involved 4 volunteers and 40 youth under the age of 12. At first i was excited because i hadn't been ice skating in a long time and it would be something out of the ordinary. To my surprise, only 2 children knew how to ice skate, which meant that while 2 volunteers were helping the children to put on and take off their skates, 2 would have to watch the children and help them when they fell and teach them how to skate. I was a little bummed out because i thought that it would take away from all of the fun i was expecting and might be a hard task, but i quickly remembered how much i loved to teach and that the children were looking to me to be there for them, even if it was just to hold their hand and guide them across the ice where they wouldn't have otherwise been able to cross on their own. I had so much fun and soon i had at least 3 children on each side of me having the time of their lives. The only problem was that time flew by too quickly and no one wanted to leave, but that was the first of several visits to the ice rink.
