Montana Campus Corps:
College Students Meeting Critical Community Needs
The Value in Teaching by Holly Musfeldt

Before I started my student teaching experience I knew I would like teaching, but now that I've been able to actually teach students I realize that I love it. I feel so good about my new career choice. Everyday the students made me laugh and love my job even more. The students I worked with were all from low income homes. After spending just a few weeks with the class I realized how important it was to have a relationship with each student. The day I had to say goodbye to the class was very emotional for me. I had developed such a good relationship with the class that it was hard to let them go. On my last they made me a Christmas card and all of them signed their names on it. They also had a class meeting and told me one by one how I helped them during my time there. Then at the end they surprised me with a gift they had all pitched in for. It was a basket full of supplies for teaching. At that point I was speechless. Students who had come from homes with nothing, were donating money to me for teaching supplies. I couldn't help but shed a few tears. This class will forever be in my heart and I will never forget the value in teaching I have learned from them.
